According to US and Philippine officials, some 300 Afghans landed in the Philippines on Monday to begin the process of applying for US visas. Last July, both governments signed an arrangement allowing hundreds of Afghans to remain in Metro Manila while their US Special Immigrant visas are processed. Teresita Daza, spokesman for the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, stated, "The DFA issues the appropriate Philippine entry visa to these applicants in accordance with existing rules and regulations." The US government would cover the Afghans' expenses throughout their stay in Metro Manila.
