According to the latest report, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) has intercepted a married couple at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City for attempting to leave the country with a counterfeit Netherlands visa. In a statement Friday, Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the couple, aged 26 and 28, were stopped after immigration officers found their Netherlands visa suspicious.
The report said that both attempted to board a Cathay Pacific flight to Amsterdam, pretending to be tourists on February 2. The BI said: “Our officers are well-trained to detect fraudulent travel documents. We warn the public against unscrupulous groups offering fake visas. These schemes not only waste hard-earned money but also put travelers at risk of legal consequences,” Viado said.
The report added that BI immigration protection and border enforcement chief Mary Jane Hizon reported that a thorough examination by the forensic documents laboratory confirmed that the visas were counterfeit. Upon questioning, the couple admitted to paying PHP268,000 for their travel arrangements, which included the fake visa.
In addition to the report, the couple was turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for further investigation. Viado noted that the BI remains vigilant against immigration fraud, adding that individuals caught using falsified documents will face strict legal consequences.
