With the changing socio economic and socio cultural conditions across the globe, the institution of marriage has been impacted in some degree globally. Recent studies have shown a steep decline in marriages in China. It seems that more and more youth of China are not opting for this sacred institution and a lifelong commitment.
Falling youth population, rising unemployment among young graduates, changing attitudes towards marriage in the current society and increasing gender polarization are few prominent reasons sited in the current report. This has led to a record 20% fall in the number of weddings in China in 2024. The numbers are based on the number of registered weddings in China. The registered weddings are millions. In 2019, it was 9.26 million and 8.13 in 2020 showing a steep downfall of 12.2 %. It continued dipping down by 6.2%( 7.3 million marriage registered) in 2021, 10.2% dip in 2022( 6.83 million marriages registered). Then surprisingly a rise of 12.4% in 2023 ( 7.68 million marriages registered) before the current steep fall of 20.5% in 2025( 6.10 millions marriages registered).
The trend indicates a fall in youths going for marriages.

That is the replacement of the 1 child poll icy in China. After the government lifted the 1 child policy, it was as replaced with 2 children policy and the population boomed again, thus prompted President Xi to cut off the population through his new law.

@Starmix . Is there any new law in China regarding marriage? I am not aware of that. This is just a report that came in news about the declining marriage in the country. Various factors are contributors and have been mentioned in the report. But there is no mention of any such new law. It will be good if you share that.

It was made into law many years ago which is why those those who got pregnant for the second child left China for Hong Kong, Taiwan and USA for fear of there lives. They will be killed. That's the law of China it's also a communist country, no fear to kill.

I am aware of that..one child policy was there for few decades and then recently revoked. But there has been no law concerning marriage.
@Augusta . Yes, it is all about personal choice. And that keeps changing with times. Our current social, economical and cultural influences are a key player in that.

The way i see it, this current generation do not value marriage, this is why we have cases of people who easily file for divorce whenever there is an issue.

But China reconsidered their one child policy when it saw that millions are growing old, thus prompted President Xi to uplift the ban and allow the newly married couple two children per household.
