According to the report, a Japanese fugitive sought by Tokyo authorities for his involvement in phishing scams has been arrested in Makati City, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported Sunday.
The report said that Eiji Shigematsu, 48, was arrested by the BI-Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) in Bel-Air Village on Friday on the strength of a mission order issued upon receipt of information from the Japanese government. “We will deport him and he will be blacklisted and banned from reentering the country,” BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said in a press release.
The report also stated that a review of Shigematsu’s travel records showed he has been overstaying in the Philippines since his last recorded arrival on Oct. 18, 2019. BI-FSU chief Rendel Ryan Sy said Japan’s Kajiki Summary Court issued an arrest warrant on Shigematsu for theft.
The report added that Shigematsu and his accomplices were accused of running a voice phishing scam that targeted fellow Japanese nationals.
The suspects allegedly posed as police officers to extort money from their victims. Although not linked to the notorious Luffy gang, authorities believe Shigematsu operated a similar scheme on a smaller scale.
In addition to the report, the Luffy group is a notorious Japanese criminal syndicate operating telecommunications fraud and extortion schemes in the Philippines. Shigematsu is now detained at the BI warden facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City pending deportation proceedings.
