I have had a running battle with my girlfriend. She spent $50 for a 20 minutes birthday photo shoot on Friday last week. I consider that extravagance and unnecessary spending. It's her money though.

Do you think it is extravagance of one to spend such amount on a 20 minutes photo shoot?

When you consider that $50 could be the comfortable salary of some people in my country for two months, you would agree with me that it is extravagance. I can't spend that amount on photos shoot except I am a complete celebrity.

Lol as the photographer, i definitely won't consider this a waste of money. On a more serious note though, that's too much l, especially when converted to naira.

It's her money and whether it's extravagant or not would depend a lot on the financial capacity of the person. What might seem extravagant for one can be no big deal for others. Rich people can spend a fortune on their celebrations and that's okay. It provides business opportunities to others, boosts up the economy. And it doesn't put them in financial constraints. But if she has gone overboard and put herself in a financial constraint situation due to this photoshoot, this was definitely not a wise decision.

It's the same here. A younger version of myself would have judged it. But with age and experience, I have got the maturity. I have seen more of world and have learnt to respect other's choices and financial expenses. My judgement in young days came from the space that I had lived a financially disciplined life in my financial capacity. Things have changed now. With my financial capacity at present, I am spending on things that were luxury to me a decade back and I would have considered it waste of money.
If the person is comfortable for paying for luxuries and pampering without falling in financial crisis, it's fair. Money is supposed to be spent and enjoyed. Everyone sets their own rules.

You don't even know if that lady could afford any kind of celebration for her birthday in previous years. And she wants to make it loud now that she can afford it.

If you have money more than what meets your basic needs and obligations, one has all the right to go ahead and indulge in some luxuries and spending that brings you happiness. But if it's going to make your life miserable and financially stressful after such act, you have not done the right. It's impulsive and foolish.
