A prison officer in Harare, Zimbabwe, has been arrested following allegations that he supplied a firearm to an inmate, which enabled the inmate to escape custody in a daring act of violence.
The inmate, 29-year-old Luke Zinyengere, was on trial for his involvement in a high-profile armed robbery at Quest Financial Services in February 2024, where over $700,000 was stolen. On March 21, Zinyengere managed to break free from his restraints at the Harare Magistrates Court after engaging in a violent shootout with prison guards. He then hijacked a Mazda Demio to flee the scene.
The prison officer, Donald Madzinga, is scheduled to appear in court today, Monday, March 24, 2025, facing charges of aiding the inmate's escape. Law enforcement sources confirmed that Madzinga is accused of providing Zinyengere with the weapon used during the escape.
