This topic comes up from time to time about whether some businesses should be allowed to only hire one gender for certain roles. On one hand, businesses should be able to make their own hiring decisions based on what's best for their needs. However, limiting an entire gender from applying could also be seen as discrimination. I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on where to draw the line. Are there some jobs or situations where preferring one gender could be justified to meet a specific business purpose? Or should skills and qualifications be the only criteria for all roles?

No business hires only one gender. It is very impossible, besides, there is no gender inequality as long as the applicant is skilled and qualified.
Some business do hire only one gender, they might add just one or two of the other gender to make it seem like the both gender work with them. Most eatery in my area prefer hiring female over male.

I think in an eatery most workers are females. There might be a few males to do heavy work like carrying cans of water, but in big restaurants, males and females are there serving.

Gender balance is a delicate subject matter. IN theory, you need gender balance in workplace but most of the time you end up hiring only capable clients, without caring about gender.

Employment for jobs should not be based on gender but on professionalism. People who are capable of doing such job should be employed. Skills and experience should come first before gender could be considered..

In tourist locations in Singapore there is one type of job that is only done by women, namely being a Mermaid, I have also never seen a luxury car advertisement without women. In addition, there are also many types of jobs that require patience such as embroidery, batik are also dominated by women.

I think what the business needs to focus on is it they are capable to handle the job. If you are only able to find capable workers in a single gender, then go ahead.

Yes! Some business is more suitable for one gender than other. For instance, like building and construction is more suitable for male gender. Though, it is possible to employ female workers but you should know that the capacity of the female can't be compared with that of the male workers
