Taiwan reports detecting 16 Chinese warships around the island

On Thursday, Taiwan reported that they had detected 16 Chinese warships in the waters surrounding the island, one of the highest counts for 2024 as Beijing increases military pressure on Taiwan. According to the defense ministry's daily report, in addition to the 16 vessels, 34 Chinese aircraft were being tracked. Beijing is performing its largest maritime drills in years, involving some coast guard vessels and 90 Chinese warships. These exercises simulate foreign ship strikes and sea route blockades. As of now, Beijing has made no pronouncements regarding heightened military activities.
